Meet our Assistant Producer: Krit Komkrichwarakool

Without a doubt, one of the biggest jobs an independent film has is marketing. Building an audience, developing partnerships with people and businesses, and planning out the distribution and release of the movie are a full time job in themselves.

And that's where Krit comes in... Krit came on board earlier this month and has done an amazing job of updating our marketing, sponsorship and press materials to ensure we present 13 Miles in the best light possible.

We asked Krit to tell us more about himself, and here he is, in his own words...

Where are you from?

I am from Bangkok, Thailand. I moved to Vancouver in 2014.

How would you describe the path that has led you to becoming a filmmaker? What other career(s) have you had?

I have always been a film lover as far as I can remember, although the path didn't lead me to the film world at first as I spent a lot of my early years in graphic design. I was quite in love with it, but unfortunately I was never really fulfilled with how that world works. With my time in college back in Thailand, I was studying communication design and I had a lot of chances to explore with art mediums. One of them was videography, which I enjoyed the most and that have led me to filmmaking. I love how complex the process is from both creative and logistic aspects. It is the making of a piece of art in a form like no others. There is so much more in a single film, and you won't know until you're a part of it.

What have you been up to before 13 Miles? What projects?

I was in school when I first came to Vancouver. After graduation I have worked on a couple of short films with Pepperman Productions. Two of mine are called: "Yesterday Was the Day We Died" and "Freefall". Meanwhile I also do graphic design and editing jobs.

Why did you decide to come on board with 13 Miles?

I believe meeting the right people is part of filmmaking. It is also my dream to help fellow filmmakers with the marketing side of their films. After having a chance to meet Helena Thom and Anthony Epp, I was extremely impressed with how much work they have put into it. It is such a great opportunity for an experience I can't find anywhere else, and I am so grateful both of them let me be a part of their first feature.

What excited you about this project?

I have never been in a feature film project where I have a seat at the big table before. I was so excited when Shanyn Maguire asked me if I'd like to work with her on 13 Miles. Not of lot of people take chances with someone like myself who is still in a learning process, and I admire Helena and Anthony for that. Also, did I already mention how impressive they are and extremely prepared for this film?

Any books or movies that have inspired you?

There are countless movies that have inspired me. I'm a fan of great film directors such as Nicolas Winding Refn, David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson, Xavier Dolan and many more. If I had to pick one at this moment, I'd say Spike Jonze's Her. A beautiful film that touches me the most in the way I can't explain.

What, in your view, is the essential role of a Producer?

As a beginner, I won't be able to say exactly what a good Producer should be. Although I can speak from a perspective of someone who also looks for Producers. When I look for a Producer, I look for a partner. A Producer who can take charge but at the same time, be a great support and problem solver for the whole production. Someone who knows the business side but still wants to keep the value of this art form. In the end, a Producer I'd like to work with is a person who cares deeply about the project, both creatively and logistically.

What challenges do you see in making 13 Miles?

I don't think I've ever been on any film project that didn't have a challenge. It is a part of the process no matter how much you have planned for. I guess you could say there is a similarity to triathlon. The rough paths and obstacles are there for us to overcome and to grow as a person.

What challenges do you see in making 13 Miles?

I am currently in charge of marketing materials for potential sponsors and distributors, and I'd like to do my job well. I have deep respect for this film and I want to deliver my best work. It is challenging, but at the same time I'm having fun doing it. I can only hope that part of my work, more or less, will help 13 Miles soar.
