Introducing “Vanessa”, played by Corey Woods
In 13 Miles, "Vanessa" is a triathlon journalist and podcaster. As someone who has grown up in the world of triathlon, she knows what it takes to be a champion and also what makes a story great. In Trevor, she sees the potential for both, and she challenges him in ways he never anticipated.
We asked Corey to tell us about her journey to 13 Miles:
What is it about Vanessa's character that you relate with?
There are so many aspects of Vanessa that I can relate to! She is very confident in who she is and where she is going, which I feel I can relate to. Like her, I am also extremely career driven and determined to succeed in everything that I do. And also, and she isn't afraid to tell people what they need to hear no matter how brutal it may sound... I am definitely guilty of that as well (sorry to all my friends trying on clothes when we go shopping).
What is it about Vanessa's character that you think resonates most with people?
I think most people will resonate with Vanessa through her honesty and her perserverance. Vanessa is a reporter who is constantly having to prove herself as not just a 'Pretty Face' but someone who actually knows what they are talking about. She has studied and has learned everything there is to know about triathlons and how to prepare for one that people don't give her enough credit. I think anyone who has dedicated a lot of time to learning something and have someone doubt your ability or skill can resonate with her story.
What attracted you to the role of Vanessa?
I really liked Vanessa's outlook on life. She really is living the life that she wants and there is nothing holding her back. She is doing everything that she wants to do on her time, no one else's. I think, as we go through life there are so many things that hold us back. "I would totally do that if I had more money..." "I would so be there but I can't take time off work..." " I would love to eat a large cheese pizza but I'm lactose intolerant..." Okay, maybe not the last one. But you get my point.
Have you completed a triathlon before?
No I have never! But I would love to try one some day!!
What do you love most about being an actor?
The free food on set. Just kidding. Well, half kidding... I love the opportunity to find myself in the characters that I am fortunate enough to play. I am so curious of people and how they go throughout their day. I want to study what their interests are and how they move. I love exploring different lives and investigating human nature. It's the most interesting thing in the world to me.
5 Fun facts about yourself:
- I am from a little village named Fruitvale.
- I am a vegetarian... or a Vegan with loose morals.
- Shark Week is my favourite week. Sharks both fascinate and terrify me.
- After seeing Pitch Perfect in theaters I spent three hours teaching myself how to do the cup song.
- I really suck at pool... or do I? Shall we bet some money on it? 😉
What question have we not asked you that you wish we had?
"If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?"
The Imperial March.
Producers' Note: While we search for our perfect music score, the Imperial March will definitely be in our mind for the Vanessa scenes... Why? You'll have to watch to find out.
Corey Woods, from Supernatural to Britney:
Corey Woods gave up her career choice of being Wonder Woman a long time ago, but has instead settled for the art of story telling. She was born and raised in a small town called Fruitvale, B.C. Ever since Corey courageously announced to her parents that she would one day be an actress, she hasn’t been taken seriously since. Despite their lack of excitement, she moved out to the big city of Vancouver after graduating to pursue her dream. She is happily residing in a highly classified and secluded location (a “house” in a “neighborhood”) with her trusty bodyguard (her “cat”) and her loyal husband (“a Johnny Depp poster”). When she is not in class practicing her craft of acting, she is most likely at the gym, prowling the sale racks for rejected shoes, or watching old movies. She is currently still searching craigslist daily for the hopes of a job opportunity to be Wonder Woman.
Corey has appeared in movies and television shows from Supernatural to Britney Ever After. She has a key role in the upcoming noir-thriller "The Iron Sixth", directed by Christopher O'Brien. Helena and Anthony worked on this movie with Corey, and if you love a good crime drama, then get ready for a riveting performance by Corey.
Corey has lots of exciting projects on the rise, be sure to watch for her.
